Watch of the Day: TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition

There will be a race for this watch almost as treacherous and competitive as the race for which it is named. The undeniably handsome Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition takes its good looks from the heady Jack Heuer days of the 1960s but is powered by all the advances of 21st-century watchmaking. The tale of the tape reveals a relatively sizeable and some would say controversial 39mm, a full 3mm increase on the 1960s original, the much-vaunted 2447S. But then did you know the average man is 30 pounds heavier than his 1960s counterpart?

As we begin a new decade, the TAG Heuer Carrera line, easily one of the most elegant of chronograph collections, is set to receive special attention this year. Introduced by Jack Heuer all of 60 years ago, it’s this collection above all which has carried the brand’s macho racing heritage through the decades. Like many a watch celebrating a significant anniversary, this collectible is limited to the founding year of Heuer, as the brand was then known, which was 1860. This is confirmed by the words “One of 1860” and “LIMITED EDITION” being engraved on the case-back. The watch will be available worldwide to customers from June 2020, and it stays refreshingly faithful to the flavor of the times in which it was born by retaining the original brand name – just ‘Heuer’ – on the dial. A charming and authentic touch.

It was in 1962 that then-CEO Jack Heuer got to hear about the Carrera Panamericana road race, a border-to-border sedan and sports car racing event held which was held on open roads in Mexico. Long before the days of over-arching health and safety, it was considered one of the most dangerous road races in the world and talented drivers died trying to win it. Serious accidents would occur and it could be hours before anyone even got to hear about it. In fact, the race in its original format only ran for 5 years from 1950 to 1955 before it was banned. Although never actually used in original Carrera Panamericana road race action, the Heuer Carrera chronograph was designed to be not only easy on the eye but easy to read too.

TAG HEUER Carrera 160 years

The 160 Years Silver Edition is based on the stainless-steel silver-dial model of 1964, with three counters and a starburst silver-colored dial. This is the watch often referred to as “2447S”.Key among the 21st-century updates is the use of the 02 caliber column-wheel chronograph movement. Its employment sees changes to the layout in that the permanent second indicator is at 6 o’clock whereas it was at 9 o’clock on the original. This is down to the fact the Valjoux 72 was configured differently.

The 02 has a power reserve of 75 to 80 hours, 30 more than the original, and consists of 168 components. The minute counter remains positioned at 3 o’clock. The 02 also has a vertical clutch which improves the precision of the start-and-stop functions and the running of the chronograph second hand. The central hour and minute hands are coated with modern-day beige SuperLuminova®. Visible through the sapphire crystal window in the caseback, there’s also a newly designed rotor with a lacquer-filled engraving identifying the watch as an anniversary edition.

This limited-edition watch comes on a black alligator strap and is presented in special packaging. It will sell for US$6,450.
